5 Online Recovery Forums Worth Visiting

People in recovery, and especially early recovery, need a great deal of advice and support. Meetings are an essential resource, but if it’s after midnight and you’re struggling with a thorny issue, the internet might be your best bet. There will be times when you need a little bit of information quickly. You might have a question your sponsor can’t answer. You might want to ask a question anonymously or share a pet peeve without offending anyone close to you. While it’s hard to build meaningful connections online, many addictions forums are a great resource for issues that arise at inconvenient times, or those topics that are too trivial, embarrassing, or potentially contentious to explore with those closest to you. Here are 5 of our favourite online recovery forums for exploring addiction and recovery.

1) Sober Recovery

Sober Recovery is one of the largest online recovery communities, with over 168,000 members, ranging from alcoholics and addicts to supportive or co-dependent family members. This means that you’re likely to get quick responses to whatever you post. It also means that the site has specialized sub-groups for people going through specific issues, ranging from forums on anxiety and other co-occurring disorders to religious or secular approaches. With threads like Newcomers to Recovery, and Newcomers Daily Support Thread, Sober Recovery is an easy and welcoming way to integrate online support forums into your life.

2) Reddit

Reddit is quite possibly the most popular site on the internet, so it’s no surprise that it offers some well-attended and lively recovery forums. r/stopdrinking is the biggest, with over 255,000 members. It advertises itself as “a place to motivate each other to stop or control drinking”, and it’s a great place to get your questions answered, engage with and gain support from others, and hear cautionary tales. The disadvantage is that its sole focus is on alcohol addiction.

r/redditorsinrecovery is a smaller group, with around 36,000 members, but it has the advantage of focusing on all forms of addiction and the mission of discussing “the various ways to achieve and maintain a life free from active addiction.” It’s a great place for sharing stories and opinions, and recent posts include whether to “out” oneself as an addict at work, how to handle things when your sponsor “bails on you”, and dealing with withdrawal symptoms from prescription pills. If you have a question you’d prefer to ask anonymously, this might be the place for you! It can also be a great resource if you’re addicted to something that isn’t a substance (gambling, food, shopping, etc.).

3) In The Rooms

In The Rooms is an online recovery tool that offers over 130 online meetings per week. They offer a host of services to those in recovery and the people who care about them, including spaces to blog, chat, and learn about addiction and getting sober. The site can also set you up with a certified recovery coach, who can support you as you set daily and weekly goals, while also monitoring your progress and growth. In The Rooms already has over 700,000 members, and its forums are a lively place to explore any issue surrounding addiction. One of the things we love about this group is the fact that it is inclusive of every treatment modality, with room for 12 Step, CBT, wellness, and mental health-centered approaches.

4) Soberocity

Soberocity is a community that exists both on and offline. It was created to foster and maintain connections between people committed to a sober lifestyle, and it can be a great place to network and build meaningful relationships with your peers in the recovery community. Their only requirement for membership is “sharing [their] enthusiasm for all avenues of addiction recovery.” From social mixers to events related to nutrition, dating, or using yoga in recovery, Soberocity is a great way to build a community of like-minded individuals who will be committed to supporting you on your recovery journey.

While the pandemic may have slowed down your ability to attend parties or events, Soberocity also has a host of other resources. It houses a blog for posts related to addiction, a curated collection of local resources around North America, and a place to share and comment on videos. If you’re feeling alienated or lonely, it’s a great place to go.

5) Ibogaine Recovery Movement

At Tabula Rasa Retreat, we have experienced firsthand the incredible power of ibogaine to combat addiction. But for many of those who have undergone the experience of ibogaine treatment, it proves hard to connect with others in the recovery community. Many members of abstinence-based groups regard ibogaine (as well as alternative treatments based on ayahuasca, psilocybin, and ketamine) as an intoxicating drug, or dismiss the ibogaine journey as new-age mumbo-jumbo. It can be intimidating to broach the subject in 12 Step groups, a fact which makes achieving connection and receiving support much more difficult.

That’s why we created the Ibogaine Recovery Movement, which facilitates support and builds connection for all of our clients who have undergone this life-changing experience, as well as anyone, anywhere who has used ibogaine to break free from addiction. The ibogaine journey is a unique and profound experience and discussing its impact, effects, and challenges with your peers will help you understand and build upon the positive changes you are making. We offer weekly online meetings with your peers around the world.

Putting an end to addiction is both hugely challenging and hugely rewarding. If you’re looking to take this positive step, or need help and support on your recovery journey, don’t hesitate to reach out to Tabula Rasa Retreat. We’re always eager to offer any information, support, or advice you need on breaking free and making recovery last!
